9 (nine) Days Post Surgery
So as I suspected, it wouldn't be long until I was walking with no canes. I went from walker, to two canes, to one cane and then I tossed the canes away to practice walking. That was yesterday (day 8). I was bored and without thinking a couple of times I just launched off without my cane. I had been using 2 canes for stability kind of like crutches. But by the afternoon, I put it to the test.
In my living room I have a long sectional sofa where I have spent most of my time where there is a chaise lounge section on the end. So I put down both canes and began walking, knowing I could grab the back of the couch if needed. I took each step slowly while concentrating on my form and they were small steps but steps none the less. I went all the way across the room turned and went back to the where my canes were waiting. I did that a few more times for practice.
And, I'm glad to report, I had no pain. My left thigh has had pain and my left leg doesn't bend very well because of swelling. But there was no pain in the hip joint. At this point I generally use the cane for stability as I don't want to fall. But I think my ability without the canes or crutches or walker will only increase.
In nine months, I'm looking at 800 kilometers in Spain. That is my motivation and I'm determined to make that happen. My first step of that was hip replacement and recovery I've got the hip replacement done and recovery is well underway, but from here its about improving my strength and my fitness, which will be a daily calling.
Buen Camino
